When Cooper and I were packing for our move (err…well…I packed and Cooper simultaneously unpacked. I suppose it was a team effort in that regard! 😉 I stood in my closet and felt completely overwhelmed with the amount of clothing and shoes.
And not in a good way.
Go ahead…go stand in YOUR closet. How do you feel?
Do you feel true love and appreciation for each item in there? I sure didn’t. So needless to say, I was due for a reset button and the local Goodwill received a major car-filled donation that afternoon!! 🙂
5 Questions to Ask when Cleaning out Yo’ Closet
1 – Has the item been damaged and I haven’t fixed it yet?
Oh my golly I am SOOOOOO guilty of this! I keep wondering, “Hmm, I wonder if this boot is going to get fixed?” as if there was some personal assistant in my home that I don’t know about that would magically appear and take care of shiz like this!?
Um, no. If it’s not A-1 priority for you to have it fixed then it’s time to say buh-bye.
2 – Is this item painful or super uncomfortable?
Don’t get me wrong. I have approximately 3 pairs of heels that I would ONLY wear to an event where I was guaranteed an experience of sitting the entire time.
But seriously, if you look at a pair of shoes and talk yourself out of wearing them because you would be relegating yourself to a day of pain than it’s time to donate. Or if you can’t breathe in a certain dress and you are ready to acknowledge that breathing is essential to quality (or existence) of life, than it’s time to donate.
3 – Have I enjoyed wearing this within the past year?
It’s not that important to you. Time to move on. Period. 😉
(For all the items you DO wear, you’ll need to give them a proper home. While unpacking I ran out of the thin velvet hangers I love…so called on a little Amazon Prime Now to deliver more hangers within 2 hours so I could continue unpacking. Once I get on a roll I don’t want to stop! LOL!)
4 – Is this piece even in style any longer?
Don’t hold onto those hammer pants thinking “Oh just you wait…one day they’ll be back in style and I’ll be ready!”
Umm, no. If they DO ever come back in style, chances are they’ll design a better hammer pant (not sure it’s possible…but we’ll see! LOL!). And you’ll buy that one.
So it’s time to bless and release the outdated trends…
5 – Does this item bring me joy?
Yes…this is the question based on the KonMari method (if you don’t know what I’m referring to, just google it and you’ll be so happy you did 😉 ). But basically, I threw all of my clothes into one giant pile (ok ok…three giant piles. I’ll be honest…I had too many clothes!!) and I held up each item and asked “Does this bring me joy?”
Surprisingly, the answer was “no” many times.
This little question is a surprisingly simple yet extremely effective way to approach cleaning out your closet!
I hope that these 5 ways help you kick off 2016 with a fresh closet full of just items you adore + want to wear 🙂
So I’m curious…who here is cleaning out their closet this New Year?!?!
