- When starting out, you’ll work harder then you’ve ever worked before.
For realz. You’ll get up super early. You’ll stay up super late. And then you’ll do it again the next day. #coffee
Well…I guess I should say that you will do this IF you are obsessed with the idea of building a business. If you aren’t obsessed, then you likely shouldn’t become your own boss.
And I don’t mean obsessed in a creepy, Chris Hansen “To Catch a Predator” way…I just mean that you will be DRAWN from something deep within your core to work as hard and as often as you can. You are no longer regulated to the 9-5.
- You will do the majority of activities for no compensation.
When starting out, you will have a learning curve and be responsible for…well…pretty much everything. Until you choose to delegate and outsource certain tasks, it’s YOU. So get used to the idea of buying your own printer ink + taking out your own trash + and paying your own phone bills. And do so with a big-a** smile on your face because hey…that trash is the product of YOUR business!
- Health insurance kinda sucks
I mean, seriously. Do I really need to say anything else about this one? 😉
- The phrase, “Don’t take your work home with you” doesn’t really apply to you when you are first starting out.
When you first take the leap into boss-dom, you WILL experience a blur between work life and home life. But don’t worry…it’s just a normal transition that won’t last long as you find your balance. 🙂 My best advice here it to phase in business hours. And then stick to them. You will be no good to your loved ones OR your clients if you are working 24/7.
- It can get somewhat lonely
This is one I never suspected when I first became my own boss. I would stare with a tinge of jealousy at the women with their laptops at the coffee shop thinking that was the ideal life as I shuffled back to my renovated closet of an office as a school psychologist (the leaky pipe above my desk in one of my school placements only served to strengthen this jealousy! LOL!)
Especially if you are working online, it can get lonely. I’m fortunate in that my job is running right alongside my own team of women, so I no longer feel alone. But I always make a big effort to get my new coaches plugged into our super rad team culture so that they are never feeling alone.
So just make sure you join groups + stay socially active with friends + and make an effort to build relationships. It’ll all be great!
- When things go wrong, who do you blame? Oh, that’s right…
- You design your day from start to finish
If you want to sleep in one morning? No problem! Want to take a 2 hour lunch and enjoy a cosmo with that salad? Go for it! Want to go for a hike simply because it’s a beautiful day outside? You get the point 😉 Being your own boss truly means that you can design your life…day by day!
- You don’t ask for permission for vacation + to stay home with your sick child + or to call off work at 3pm for an early happy hour
I have a woman on my team who became her own boss after replacing her income as a nurse and she tells me time and time again how incredible the freedom has been for herself and her family. She is home for her sons when they are too sick to go to school. She spends her summers with her sons and husband at their lake cabin…making memories that she otherwise would never have known were a possibility.
Quite simply put…the freedom to travel and to be truly present for those you love when they need you, is the greatest gift of being your own boss.
- The sky is the limit with what you can do + earn! There is no ceiling + pay scale.
With a traditional work position, there is a typically a cap on what you can earn. As your own boss, the sky is truly the limit.
- You give yourself a raise when you want to earn one.
Not happy with what you are earning? Then you have the ability to take action and change it. You won’t need to run ideas by your boss for approval…so be positive + take action + own it! You da boss! 😉
- Your “office” attire can be Lululemon!
I personally like to dress up about 80% of the time as it makes me feel more mentally dialed in. This Tobi sweatshirt shift dress is kinda a perfect example…cozy/comfy while still feeling somewhat polished. Throw on something like this Gorjana necklace and you are upping your game! 😉 But I do love those days where I throw on my “active wear” and make a messy ponytail and call it good!
- You can work from home, a coffee shop, a beach chair, or at your favorite restaurant bar (basically wherever there is wi-fi!)
I’ve worked from a beach chair in the caribbean + while having lunch on top of the Space Needle + and from a cruise ship in Alaska. The modern day entrepreneur doesn’t have the traditional office…and that suits me perfectly 😉
But yes, my typical office is a coffee shop. And the fact that I can type this sentence just makes me smile. 🙂
- No boss! (Because YOU are the boss! 😉 )
