Final Wedding Dress Fitting Moment

moments of the week

Ugh…Such a dork you guys! Haha!
Just had my final wedding dress fitting (EEK!) and I legit I struggled for 2 solid minutes to take a “normal smile” selfie…and I just could NOT.  So no glamour over here…just happiness!
——-
Help please –> From what you can see of the top of this dress and knowing that I’m doing a french twist hairstyle…what would YOU recommend I do for EARRINGS:::
A) Go BIG and GLAM
B) Go SMALL and SIMPLE
.
THANK YOU for your help!! You guys make these decisions easier!

That Moment My Heart Kinda Broke Open

heartbreak

The conversation I overheard while making dinner the other night:::

SETTING: Cooper is watching the “Wonder Woman” movie for the 85th time:

TROY: “Cooper…what about this movie do you like so much?”

COOPER: “I like Wonder Woman!”

TROY: “How come?”

COOPER: “Because she’s beautiful.”

TROY: laughing “Oh, you think she’s beautiful?”

COOPER: “She IS beautiful…just like my momma.”

Annnnnndddd I die.  Haha!

Moment That Took Place Nearly 2 Years Ago!

Packing boxes

So yeah…this photo did not take place this week!  Rather this moment was in the summer of 2015 when Cooper and I were packing up our Portland home to move to Denver, Colorado to start our new life with Troy.
But I’m sharing this moment here because it was SUCH a pivotal moment for me…and I hope the message speaks to YOU if you maybe need to hear it.
So yeah…I was fine being alone in Portland.  Cooper and I had a very full life together. My idea of a perfect evening is dinner with Cooper and then maybe after he goes to bed I open a bottle of Pinot and a book (or watch “Magic Mike” #honesty) and kick back.

But underneath everything, I would feel loneliness. The thing is, I don’t think I could put a label on that feeling at the time because I’ve been lonely for such a long time.

I remember one night (after a glass or two #honestyagain) I downloaded the app that my girlfriend told me I should try. I thought it was called “Timber” at first (gah…I’m such an Oregonian!).

But once I figured out the real name, I downloaded the app and looked skeptically at the faces of these dudes on Tinder. I think I swiped “no” to 100 guys in a row before I turned off my phone laughing because the whole thing felt ridiculous.

And because I didn’t want just any man. I’d rather be alone and living la vida local with Cooper knowing we were safe and happy.

I never thought anyone would be the type of man for Cooper that he deserves. I never thought I would have a love like what my grandparents had (married 75+ years and in big-time lurve).

I didn’t feel worthy of that type of love.

That last sentence was a tough one to type.

Troy and I have been friends for 7 years and when he reached out to me to see if I was doing okay in Portland…my heart (which had been hell bent on protecting itself for good reason) began to feel warmth. I slowly began to break down my self-limiting beliefs of my own worthiness…

And now NEXT WEEK we will be saying “I do” and solidifying our little family.
————-

The REASON I’m writing this and being so {embarrassingly} honest is because…well…I guess I just want to tell you that where YOU are right now does NOT dictate where you will be in one month or one year from now!

You may be battling storms and feeling fear and uncertainty in various aspects of your life. But KNOW that you will get through this season.

Just keep seeking your own self truth. Have the courage to seek the path that feels right for you (to hell what others *think* you should do).

And start to believe that you are worthy. Truly worthy.

Because you are.
Thank you for reading and let’s make it the best weekend ladies!!

Top 5 Biggest Mistakes New Bloggers Make

I have Pinot Noir to thank for my blogging career.

Seriously.  It was near the end of summer in 2011 and I had just poured my 2nd glass of Oregon Pinot and sat down in front of the computer and literally told myself “Enough of the excuses woman!  Just do it!”

I had been thinking about starting a blog for nearly a full year.  But like so many women who consider starting a blog, the reasons why it wouldn’t work out always seemed to outweigh the reasons to go for it:

  • We compare ourselves to others who are already successful bloggers and the doubts creep in as we tell ourselves “I could never be as pretty/funny/stylish/you-name-it as she is.”
  • We inventory our level of expertise and decide we aren’t worthy
  • And we make excuses with lame self-talk like “I am not techy enough” or “I wouldn’t even know where to begin!”

So we go back to watching Bachelor in Paradise and another day goes by with no action.

Top 5 Mistakes New Bloggers Make

Any of this sound familiar?

Well, this was my own personal experience…but it all changed that night.  I stayed up until nearly 2am that night, but when my head hit that pillow, I was officially a “blogger.”

Right away, I set about researching best practices for blogging and how to grow a community like the good little nerd I am.  I then put into practice what I learned and after a year and a half, my little corner of the internet was averaging well over a quarter million pageviews a month.

But we all make mistakes when starting something new, right?  I mean, that’s HOW we learn in the first place!

So whether you have a blog or you have just been thinking about starting one…here are the top 5 mistakes new bloggers make (that hopefully you can avoid!)

MISTAKE #1: Not engaging on other blogs + connecting with other bloggers

One of the best pieces of advice I can give to any blogger who wants to grow a community, would be to engage with other blogs (comment thoughtfully on posts, share posts on social media that you love, etc.)  AND actually connect with other bloggers (send a DM with a specific complement, arrange collaborations with other bloggers, etc.)

And yes, I know this sounds confusing because you might be thinking, “How is connecting with other bloggers going to help my blog?”   So here’s my answer yo:

  • You cannot be an island and expect people to just stumble upon your blog.  It just won’t happen.
  • The blogging world is actually somewhat small, especially when you break it down into niches.  The more you contribute by initiating conversations and sharing others work, the more it will be reciprocated!
  • When you go to events or meet-up with other bloggers, you tag one another in social media posts which essentially means you are sharing your unique audiences with one another.  That is huge!

ACTION TIP:  Commit to commenting thoughtfully on at least 10 new blogs each day.  Bookmark your favorites and send 2 direct messages a day to give a compliment/engage personally.

Top 5 Biggest Mistakes New Bloggers Make

MISTAKE #2: Posting infrequently and inconsistently

How often you post often depends on your particular niche.  But the rule-of-thumb for most new blogs that *truly* want to grow into something larger would be to post 3-5 times per week.  This level of frequency can taper off slightly as you are more established.

But THIS is the more common path new bloggers take:

Month one: 20 posts

Month two: 18 posts

Month three: 3 posts

Month four: 0 posts

Month five: 1 post (the ever common “Sorry I’ve been MIA guys!” post 😉 )

Because let’s be honest, coming up with ideas and then executing the actual content is A LOT of work.  But one must treat their blog like their business and show up no matter what.

Going on vacation?  Preschedule posts.

Super sick?  Ask a blogger friend to guest post.

Readers want to know what to expect from you, so establish your schedule and let’s do the damn thang!

MISTAKE #3: Not responding to comments

Blah!  This one irks me.  If someone takes the time to leave a thoughtful comment, then let’s just all agree to reply, m’kay?!

We can’t expect people to want to comment and engage with us if it’s one-sided.  So be as gracious with your comment section as you are in real life.

MISTAKE #4: Thinking the blog is all about them

It’s not about you.  It’s actually about everyone else!

The bloggers who understand that ideas + engagement + adding value + entertainment are what it’s allllllll about are the bloggers who explode!

MISTAKE #5: Trying to be someone else

Oh Nelly!  This is a big one!

When I first started blogging, I thought I needed to do everything the exact same away as all these other bloggers.  So I followed their lead and basically re-created a version of them (very poorly I might add!)

But my blog didn’t explode until I decided to stop the madness already and embrace my own voice and write about the shiz that I wanted to write about!  I did things differently and in a way that felt authentic to me…which in turn allowed readers to connect with me on a much deeper level!

Because let’s face it, the comparison chip is implanted into the mindset of nearly every woman on earth and it’s way too easy to browse your Instagram feed or your favorite blogs and find yourself stung by the comparison bug.

So quit that!  😉

You will never find true success if you are trying to be a carbon copy of someone else. So abandon all the white noise created by the content of other bloggers in your niche and create content for YOUR unique voice and perspective!

——

So I’d love to know…do YOU relate personally to any of these common mistakes?
Thanks so much for reading!

So let’s be real.  You want to create something.  Maybe it’s:::

  • a business (doesn’t matter if it’s a side hustle or a 6-figure swagger)
  • a new *real* fitness routine that will have you f i n a l l y reaching those goals!
  • or really any new endeavor that improves your life in a BIG way!

But day after day passes and nothing changes because…well…s o m e t h i n g keeps holding you back!  But you aren’t sure what that s o m e t h i n g is!?

The funny thing is that most all of us who are brave enough to initiate (not just dream about) climbing “Goal Mountain” find ourselves at some point in the climb sitting on the side of the trail wondering:

  • Am I strong enough to really do this?
  • Maybe this just isn’t for me…?

But you ARE strong enough and it’s time to stop questioning your ability and greatness!  So let’s explore the FIVE most common ways us women get in our own freakin’ way AND the small, simple shifts to knock it off already!

rooftop view
#1: You’re trying to do it all (which will keep you small)

You can.not.do.it.all.  You MUST multi-task and by that I mean you gotta hire out shiz OR prioritize and then shave the fat.

For your business:  You need to hire out the things that you either A) kinda suck at or B) soak up the majority of your time without really adding to your bottom line income wise.

For your personal endeavors:  Spend 2-3 days actually writing down HOW you spend your time.  Then take a look and see where you can shave the fat:

  • Where are you spending time doing something that is NOT in-line with your life priorities?
    • Um, let’s just say that the  season finale of The Bachelorette (the most dramatic one ever lol!) was 3 hours long.  THREE HOURS.  Which means people across the country spent 12% of their day staring at a box.
    • If you don’t enjoy cooking and it soaks up your time, then research a healthy meal delivery service!  Sure it may SEEM like a luxury (although depending on where you live, most are very affordable), but think what you could do with those extra 30-45 minutes!
  • Are you spending longer amounts of time on activities that really could be done in half the time?
    • Spend only 30 minutes a day on the phone with friends versus an hour
    • Set up your grocery list on a delivery website and simply tweak it each week + have it delivered.
    • And seriously…how much time are you truly spending on social media each day (watching Instagram Stories, scrolling Facebook, etc.)?  What else could you be doing with that time that would bring you closer to your goals?!

#2: You prioritize everyone else

Do you find yourself saying YES to everyone else, only to have to say NO to yourself because your exhausted and run out of time?  Then good news…you’re a lovely person and we CAN tweak this habit without turning into a meanie! 😉

So Gretchen Rubin refers to this personality as an “Obliger.”  An Obliger can find time + reasons to do for others what they can’t do for themselves.  So you say “yes” to attend that party that you really don’t want to go to while you let another day go by with no workout because you don’t have time.

I think those of us who are moms can REALLY struggle with this because we think to ourselves, “Selves…I can’t put myself above the needs of my children!   What type of mom would do that?!”

But here is the truth –>  I work with women every.darn.day who will tell you that the 50 lbs they are carrying around is BECAUSE they thought sacrificing self-care time for others was just the cost of parenthood.  But once they started to implement even just 30 minutes of self-care a day, they were actually able to give more of themselves (with more energy + love + satisfaction!).

black pencil skirt

We can’t pour into others from an empty cup.  So prioritize your self-care and self-development ladies!  Everyone will be better off because of it.

#3: You have a case of “SelfDoubtItis”

Do any of these sound familiar to you?

  • Sigh…I don’t have a degree or any special training…
  • So many others are already doing it, I could never stand out or be successful…
  • I have no idea where to even begin…
  • Why would anyone want to work with me?  I’m not really all that special…

So yeah…FEAR is at the root of all these common statements I hear from women every single day.  And nothing kills dreams faster then flippin’ fear.

I’ve ABSOLUTELY been there.  Gosh, I remember when I was in high school and I told my father excitedly that I had decided I wanted to become an attorney.  My father, who is an attorney, replied with authority and zero hesitation: “Marion…you don’t want to be an attorney.  There are already way too many lawyers and not enough jobs.”

I remember feeling deflated as I walked away from that conversation and it makes me sad to admit that I allowed FEAR (fear of never finding a job after law school) to prevent me from ever truly considering law as an option for me.

The funny thing is that my brother told my dad the same thing and my dad had much the same reply.  But my brother’s response was “Well, I’m going to do it anyway!”  And now he is a tax attorney for Amazon and LOVES his job.

So no…I’m not saying that I lay in bed regretting not becoming an attorney as I LOVE what I do and truly feel I was *meant* to do this.  BUT I regret allowing the opinions of others to plant doubt + fear in the garden of my mind.  I allowed fear to steer my ship…and where fear drives is never a place we want to go!

So HERE are just a few of my favorite personal development books to explore if you feel fear creeps in just a littttttllee too often.  Change your mind –> change your life.

Best personal development books

#4: You haven’t really made a decision yet…

So simple question.  Have you:

A) Committed to TRY something until it gets too difficult OR

B) Truly made a DECISION to make “it” happen no matter what?

I’ll keep this one short because it’s very simple.  Making a choice and trying something HOPING it works out is a completely different animal than making a decision.  Think about your particular vision and ask yourself which one applies best to your state of mind.

#5: You only show up when you feel like it…

“I don’t feel like working out.”

“I tired and don’t want to stay up until 1:00am working on this webinar.”

“I want to go to the movies…I don’t want to learn about boring Facebook Ads.”

And these are just things I’ve said in the past 72 hours! LOL!  #keepingitreal

But the REAL difference between successful people + unsuccessful people is simply this:

BOTH groups of people don’t feel like doing it…but successful people do it anyway.  Successful people focus on the long-term benefits and vision while unsuccessful people are concerned with immediate gratification and the short term situation.

—–

So honestly…did you see yourself in ANY of these five ways we stop ourselves??

My hope is that you identified with 1 or more and you are fired up to take action!   Just start with one task + don’t overthink it + just go!!

You got this girl!

Modern female entrepreneur

I bought my first house when I was 24 years old.

It was a former drug repo house that was literally a wreck + smelled like urine + and the train tracks were a stones throw away.

But I walked in and all I saw was the beauty I KNEW I could turn it into.

I did not know:::
how to do electrical work
how to lay tile
how to install a toilet

ALL I knew was that I could learn and I was capable of doing hard things.

So I was “that girl” who went to every Home Depot class! I didn’t spend my weekends at the pool hashtagging cool things like #girlsquad and #blessed.

Nope.

I spent my weekends crying at the base of that damn toilet as I failed installing it a few times and I got toilet juice on me + painting cabinets because I couldn’t afford to replace them + getting to know the Home Depot staff on a 1st name basis (Hi Greg and Dawn!!).

female entrepreneur

MY POINT #1:::
I didn’t know what the heck I was getting myself into, but I KNEW that I could figure it out. Not because I’m special (I’m not). But because I believe EVERYONE is capable of greatness if they only can get out of their own damn way and take action!

When my realtor handed me that $60,000 check when I sold that house 2 years later…I walked down the street with happy tears rolling down my cheeks.
And it wasn’t about the money (it never is). It was 100% because I believed in myself just enough to do something most people wouldn’t. I felt pride in that.

BCBG Bell Sleeve Blouse

MY POINT #2:::
I see you. And I believe in what YOU are capable of in this world. You watch me and think “I can’t do what she is doing!”  But girl…you are wrong!!!

I receive messages all.the.time from women that say that they WANT to build a business or do something great with their life (go back to school, move cross country to a city they love, quit their so-so job, etc) yet they doubt their ability.

And really, they are doing what most humans do…allowing fear to drive their life bus.

And while you may SAY you want something, as long as you have this underlying subconscious belief that you are not worthy or capable of actually doing it, that fear is going to continue to drive your life bus down that dirt road toward the city of mediocrity.

And woman, you BELONG over in the city of greatness!

So is taking action scary?  Yes.

But do it anyway and you’ll look back a year later and be so grateful you went from “wanting” to “deciding” to change your life!

PS – Here is a little BONUS for you to inject some power in creating action!  Below are my Top 8 personal development books for creating REAL change in your world!!  Have you read any of these??  If so, what did you think!?

It’s been a while since I have done my Moments of the Week posts…so this will actually be a Moments of the Month post!  Excited to get back at it!

Little Rascal Moment

This kid had my phone for maybe 2 minutes and managed to send a “You Better Work Bitch” Beyoncé gif to a former co-worker of mine whom I haven’t spoken with in over 7 years.
Awesome.

Surreal Moment

wedding dress

I went wedding dress shopping you guys.

Something I never thought I would ever do again.  Wait…scratch that.  This was not something I thought I’d ever WANT to do again.

But God has a funny way of writing our life stories.

I can’t wait to show you guys what I chose!!

Boo-yah Moment

3 day refresh

Buh-bye muffin top!!
I finished the last day of the Ultimate Reset this past month and I’m feeling all cleaned up + energized!! Crazy what our bodies can do in just 3 weeks you guys!

Moment I Didn’t Think Would Happen

walking on beach

CONFESSION:
I used to put Cooper to bed + pour myself a glass of wine + and allow my tired mind and body to dream about my vacation fantasy…
And I’m sure my fantasy would likely be rather pathetic to most of you…but I’m going to share anyway!

GUYS –> I literally DREAMED of going to some totally secluded cabin in the San Juan Islands ALL BY MYSELF. I would only have a case of wine + ingredients to cook food + and a bag full of books from my local library. I would have no internet and no one would know where to find me.

I’d be like the Unabomber, only without the evil stuff.

– I knew it was a fantasy.
– I have never had family help with watching Cooper.
– I have basically been a single parent since he was born.
– I love Cooper more than anything…yet I will be the first to admit that being a parent is THE hardest job

So when Troy told me that he wasn’t able to come to Punta Canta with me because of a work conflict, I was so so sad.

BUUUUUUTTTT, I immediately pulled up my big girl panties and thought, “Hey Marion…maybe this is your time to do what you wanted to do before Troy came back into your life?!”

So that’s what I did.

I took my “mom vacation” in Punta Cana and I kinda owned it!
– I booked spa appointments like it was my job
– I read books while sipping on red wine
– But BETTER than my fantasy –> I had several members of my team right along side me in Punta Cana to keep my laughing nonstop thoguhtout the day.

My point is this:::
Your fantasy WILL come true. Might not be on your frame. Maybe not according to your original thoughts. BUT…it will happen. You just have to keep showing up to LIFE the way that you feel is RIGHT.

Raise your standard. Be that voice. KNOW that your “vacation” is coming. 😉

Thanks so much for reading!

Like most women, when I head out on a date night I do NOT want to lug around a giant bag!  Not sexy.  So I par it down to the bare minimum which includes my I.D. + phone + and 4 basic beauty products!

What's in my date night clutch

applying lipstick

MAC Lipstick

Beauty Product #1:  MAC Lipglass in “Signs of Spring”

So this has been my go-to lipstick since I can remember.  It used to be called “Underage” but according to my resident MAC guy here in Denver, that was too controversial of a name and they were forced to change it.  So “Signs of Spring” it is!!

I don’t go anywhere without this baby.  It’s similar to NARS “Turkish Delight” (which I also love) but I feel it wears longer!

MAC Studio Fix

Beauty Product #2: MAC Studio Fix Powder Foundation

Lasts forever + amazing light coverage + perfect for that mid-dinner touchup during date night!

NARS Laguna

Beauty Product #3: NARS Laguna Bronzer

Anyone else find the makeup counter women to be super intimidating!?   I basically end up nodding my head to every suggestion they make and leave spending 3x the amount I intended.  Well, a few weeks ago I went into Nordstrom looking for a new NARS Laguna Bronzer compact and the lady behind the counter told me I “needed” to get this bronzer/highlighter duo instead! LOL!

So yeah…I did.

And I love it.  🙂

hair band

Beauty Product #4:  A hairband!

CONFESSION:  Sometime between Pinot Noir Glasses #2 and #3…Marion gets this urgent desire to put her hair up.  And not like in a classy bun or a tasteful chiffon.  No, she throws it up in a style very similar to what her hair looks like after an intense cardio workout.

Keeping it classy.  Even in her Tobi sequin shift dress (aka Cooper’s favorite dress that mommy owns).   And yes, I will now stop talking in the 3rd person. 😉

date night

Would love to hear what basic beauty products YOU carry in your bag!!

Thanks so much for reading!

Have you ever dated a man that acts as if the kitchen is a foreign country?  And not like someplace fun like Paris or London…but a hostile land of harsh conditions and archaic law!!  And the idea of cooking anything more than toast is enough to make them throw up their hands and order takeout?

Let’s be honest…not so sexy in a grown man.

Well, that will NOT be my son!  Haha!  I have been intentional about involving Cooper in the kitchen since he could stand safely on a chair.  He loves producing something we all can enjoy and the school psychologist in me loves the hands on learning + bonding time we have together!

Here are my TOP 5 TIPS for engaging your child(ren) in the kitchen with success:::

  1. Let them be official tasters!

This may be kinda a “duh Marion” one…but it’s surprising how many of my girlfriends don’t let their kids taste as they go.  They want to wait until the finished product is done.

Encourage them to taste the fresh veggies + fruits + other ingredients as you cook and ask your child to describe the taste + texture {“This is crunchy momma!” or “This is spicy!”}  Then you can take it a step further and ask questions such as “Which one is crunchy?  This piece of red bell pepper or this piece of cheese?”  Kids LOVE mini-experiments like this!

mommy and son cooking

making healthy kid snack

2) Practice Colors and Counting!
We sort things by color and then often count them {“Can you hand me 7 pieces of red bell pepper?”}  And yes…we eat a lot of red bell pepper.  LOL!

And let them accomplish mini tasks that build confidence and pride such as asking them to bring you a certain number of items {“Could you bring me 1 big spoon and 2 little spoons?”

INSIDE SCOOP:  These are the type of tasks that are requested in the IQ/Cognitive tests I would give to kiddos as a school psychologist.  By weaving this type of conversational learning into your child’s day, you will help strengthen their working memory!

3) Give them a job to own
Cooper is always in charge of stirring duties and he takes great pride in this!  He has a special spoon and will spend several minutes stirring until he is satisfied with the blendage (and yes I know that’s not a word but I like it so it stays). 😉

4) Talk through the recipe with them!

So the school psych in me (poor Cooper) uses a lot of First/Then Statements with him while cooking.  So “FIRST we’ll spread the peanut butter, THEN we’ll slice some banana.”  This helps children 4 and under grasp the concept of order.

5) Put on Music!

Cooking and engaging with food should be JOYFUL!  So even if you don’t feel like cooking (we’ve all been there), throw on the Trolls soundtrack and I promise you’ll soon be laughing + dancing + smiling through making dinner together 🙂

And THAT is a memory you had better believe your little ones will cherish.

BONUS to ALLLLL of this:  Cooper is now WAY more open minded with what’s on his dinner plate!

So yeah…his future partner in life can thank me later because the boy even joins me for dishes!!

Hope you find these tips helpful!  I’d love to hear if YOU have your kiddos help out in the kitchen?  If so, what type of things do you love to make together?!

being your own boss

It’s been nearly 3 years since I decided to take the leap and become my own boss.   Since then, I’ve learned a few things about bossing myself around and all the good and more challenging stuff that comes along with it.
So here is my personal Pro/Con list to being the big cheese!

Cons:

  • When starting out, you’ll work harder then you’ve ever worked before.

For realz.  You’ll get up super early.  You’ll stay up super late.  And then you’ll do it again the next day.  #coffee

Well…I guess I should say that you will do this IF you are obsessed with the idea of building a business.  If you aren’t obsessed, then you likely shouldn’t become your own boss.

And I don’t mean obsessed in a creepy, Chris Hansen “To Catch a Predator” way…I just mean that you will be DRAWN from something deep within your core to work as hard and as often as you can.  You are no longer regulated to the 9-5.

coffee shop office

  • You will do the majority of activities for no compensation.

When starting out, you will have a learning curve and be responsible for…well…pretty much everything.  Until you choose to delegate and outsource certain tasks, it’s YOU.  So get used to the idea of buying your own printer ink + taking out your own trash + and  paying your own phone bills.  And do so with a big-a** smile on your face because hey…that trash is the product of YOUR business!

  • Health insurance kinda sucks

I mean, seriously.  Do I really need to say anything else about this one? 😉

  • The phrase, “Don’t take your work home with you” doesn’t really apply to you when you are first starting out.

When you first take the leap into boss-dom, you WILL experience a blur between work life and home life.  But don’t worry…it’s just a normal transition that won’t last long as you find your balance.  🙂  My best advice here it to phase in business hours.  And then stick to them.  You will be no good to your loved ones OR your clients if you are working 24/7.

being your own boss

  • It can get somewhat lonely

This is one I never suspected when I first became my own boss.  I would stare with a tinge of jealousy at the women with their laptops at the coffee shop thinking that was the ideal life as I shuffled back to my renovated closet of an office as a school psychologist (the leaky pipe above my desk in one of my school placements only served to strengthen this jealousy! LOL!)

Especially if you are working online, it can get lonely.  I’m fortunate in that my job is running right alongside my own team of women, so I no longer feel alone.  But I always make a big effort to get my new coaches plugged into our super rad team culture so that they are never feeling alone.

So just make sure you join groups + stay socially active with friends + and make an effort to build relationships.  It’ll all be great!

  • When things go wrong, who do you blame?  Oh, that’s right…
But the good news?  Being your own boss means you are riding a rollercoaster.  And when you are down you simply have to see it as an opportunity to ride back up!  #enjoytheride!
gorjana necklace

Pros:

  • You design your day from start to finish

If you want to sleep in one morning?  No problem!  Want to take a 2 hour lunch and enjoy a cosmo with that salad?  Go for it!  Want to go for a hike simply because it’s a beautiful day outside?  You get the point 😉  Being your own boss truly means that you can design your life…day by day!

be your own boss

  • You don’t ask for permission for vacation + to stay home with your sick child + or to call off work at 3pm for an early happy hour

I have a woman on my team who became her own boss after replacing her income as a nurse and she tells me time and time again how incredible the freedom has been for herself and her family.  She is home for her sons when they are too sick to go to school.  She spends her summers with her sons and husband at their lake cabin…making memories that she otherwise would never have known were a possibility.

Quite simply put…the freedom to travel and to be truly present for those you love when they need you, is the greatest gift of being your own boss.

  • The sky is the limit with what you can do + earn!  There is no ceiling + pay scale.

With a traditional work position, there is a typically a cap on what you can earn.  As your own boss, the sky is truly the limit.

  • You give yourself a raise when you want to earn one.

Not happy with what you are earning?  Then you have the ability to take action and change it.  You won’t need to run ideas by your boss for approval…so be positive + take action + own it!  You da boss! 😉

  • Your “office” attire can be Lululemon!

I personally like to dress up about 80% of the time as it makes me feel more mentally dialed in.  This Tobi sweatshirt shift dress is kinda a perfect example…cozy/comfy while still feeling somewhat polished.   Throw on something like this Gorjana necklace and you are upping your game! 😉  But I do love those days where I throw on my “active wear” and make a messy ponytail and call it good!

Tobi Shift Dress

  • You can work from home, a coffee shop, a beach chair, or at your favorite restaurant bar (basically wherever there is wi-fi!)

I’ve worked from a beach chair in the caribbean + while having lunch on top of the Space Needle + and from a cruise ship in Alaska.  The modern day entrepreneur doesn’t have the traditional office…and that suits me perfectly 😉

But yes, my typical office is a coffee shop.  And the fact that I can type this sentence just makes me smile.  🙂

  • No boss!  (Because YOU are the boss! 😉 )

Boom!  🙂

Are you your own boss or have you been thinking about becoming your own boss?  I’d love to hear your thoughts and/or questions below!

By now I’m fairly certain everyone has heard of Fabletics.  Right?  Well, the Kate Hudson owned fitness apparel company that operates on a monthly subscription structure has its fair share of fans AND critics.

Because I purchase so many workout clothes from various designers/stores, I receive a ton of questions from women asking about the quality + service + value of Fabletics.  So I thought that I would pull together an honest review post!

So let’s break it down, shall we?!!

COST:

Soo…Fabletics works 2 ways.  You can pay the full price listed for each item OR you can become a “VIP Customer” and pay $49.95 a month and receive a discount.  You also have the option to skip months with no penalty if you wish….BUT here is the problem.  I don’t always remember!

Fabletics Order

See that light gray number up there??  That is how much I’ve racked up after nearly 6 months of forgetting to skip the month.  Ugh!  Just.can’t.adult.when.it.comes.to.this!   Because yes, they do send email reminders but with the number of emails I receive it’s just…well…easy to miss I guess?

So if you are a rockstar at managing your email inbox (unlike me) or you or awesome at remembering to perform a small task once a month like skipping the month (unlike me), then you’ll be just fine 😉

But regarding the price structure overall, I would say that it’s very good!  You can order an entire outfit starting at $49.95 (prices for complete outfits typically range from $49.95-$89.95).  So for basically the price of a couple bottles of wine (my favorite analogy 😉 ), you can freshen up your workout style with a complete outfit!

QUALITY:

So it’s NOT Lululemon or Lorna Jane quality….but again we aren’t paying those prices.  So I’ll keep this section short and say that it’s fairly good quality for the price!  I’ve had a few pair of Fabletics leggings that have lasted me years and they look as great today as they did then.

Hands down my favorite pair of leggings are their Salar Leggings.  They are seriously amazing.

STYLES/DESIGN:

Eh.  I’d say 80% are kinda JV while the other 20% are Varsity.

Fabletics scooped back

The problem is that the 20% you actually want, sell-out early in the month.

I DID just find 3 styles that I liked and ordered (because hey…I have $299 to spend, right?!  LOL!)  And here they are:::

Fabletics Domain

Umm, are those weights?  {style name: Domain}

Fabletics Queue I hold my balls like this too.  {style name: Queue}

Fabletics Micron

The sports bra that comes with this one is very cool!  {style name: Micron}

Customer Service:

I only have had to deal with them once, and it was a slightly below average experience.  My main concern is actually when/if I go to cancel my VIP Membership one day…I REALLY hope it won’t be as horrible an ordeal as when I cancelled my FabKids membership (they are part of the same Fab Family).  Because THAT was awful on multiple levels.  But we’ll see!

I asked for the input and opinions from my Facebook readers and here is what they said:

OVERALL:

Fabletics definitely is a little hit or miss…so I don’t think it’s for everyone.

Fabletics pros and cons

I would say overall that I would recommend Fabletics to anyone who wants to continuously update and add to their workout clothing drawer and is okay with paying less and receiving an average quality product (not Lorna Jane or Lulu quality).  But if you aren’t interested in expanding that section of your closet, then a subscription based source is likely not the right choice.

Do YOU have a Fabletics Subscription??  What are YOUR thoughts from your personal experience?  I’d love to hear in the comments below!!

So this is a story that I never thought I would EVER write!  But typing the words felt almost cathartic…like a full circle moment had just occurred!  So here goes…:

8 years ago:

I had just moved to Denver and heard about a workout class in my high-rise gym.  “Just go Marion” I told myself as allllllll the reasons why I shouldn’t raced through my mind.  But ultimately, I threw on my workout uniform of soccer shorts + cotton t-shirt and stepped into the elevator.

There were a few people waiting in the gym lobby and I decided to stand only middle awkward waiting for some form of direction.  People were talking and I looked up…and locked eyes with Troy.  I quickly looked away because, quite honestly, his presence felt incredibly pervasive.  Like nothing I’d ever felt before and nothing I’ve been able to find a label to describe.

I was engaged to someone else at the time and so that door was never opened.  We fell into a friendship and he was soon with someone else.

For the entire 4 years I lived in Denver, the same group worked out together during the week and then went out together on the weekends.  I got to know/love/admire his heart and value his friendship during this time.

1.5 years ago:

Gosh.  When I left Las Vegas with Cooper and settled into Portland, Oregon…I had NO interest in a relationship.  In fact, I seriously remember telling myself, “Maybe in a year I’ll let a man buy me dinner.”  LOL!

But honestly, I can’t go into all of the particulars/reasons…except to say that I was broken and yet LEAVING my marriage in Las Vegas was only possible because I had put my own pieces back together.  And gosh darn it…I was DETERMINED not to let anything happen to my pieces again.  {That sounds dirty…but I don’t know how else to word it! LOL!}

That and I just wanted to protect Cooper from everything.  Everything and anything.

BUT THEN:

I get a text from Troy around Thanksgiving time.  I was standing in my brother’s living room and I looked at my phone and I nearly dropped it.

“Oh my gosh!” I said out loud.

“What?” my brother asked.

“Do you remember meeting Troy when you visited me in Denver?”

“MARION!!!  Oh my gosh…no.  You just need to put your phone down and let’s go grab dinner,”

he said with a big knowing smile {brother’s always know 😉 }

So over the next several months, Troy and I would text back and forth and then one day he asked if he could call me.  Before I could respond, my phone rang.  We talked until 2am.

TODAY:

I know that our story may seem to have unfolded quickly to some (I’ve even received some not-so kind messages from readers about it), but if you are fortunate enough to be with your soulmate, you understand.

Time is just a feeling…and it always stops when I look at him.

LOOKING BACK:

I am grateful for the journey —> without all of the hard times, we would not have Cooper!!  And Cooper is the critical 3rd leg to our stool and at the center of all we do.

And honestly?  All those nights in my past where I laid in bed feeling frozen…

Invisible.

Stuck.

Lost.

These are the feelings I felt at my lowest.  And I didn’t know it then, but they were also seeds that TODAY allow me to grow + experience a level of gratitude I didn’t know was possible for our love.

———

I can’t wait to marry this man in Cannon Beach this September!  And I am so excited to share the planning + journey with all of YOU…as YOU have been my source of love/friendship for longer than you realize.   So thank you from the bottom of my heart.
